Nationals Sprint Race – 4 medals!

Sean Doherty and Carly Wynn lead Saratoga Biathlon Club to four medals at the 2010 US Biathlon Championships at Fort Kent. Doherty skied to an impressive silver medal in the Youth Mens field, competing against athletes 3 and 4 years older than himself. Wynn won a bronze medal in the Youth Women’s division, overcoming a tough day in the range with fast skiing.

Conditions were slow today, and got progressively slower as the race progressed. By the time the masters raced the big uphill (the cote de suffrage) was complete mush. The cote de suffrage is the longest steep climb (about 25%) that has ever been skied by a mortal man, by the last loop skiers were sinking about 1 foot into the slush on every step.

In the Masters mens division Eli Walker and Tom Moffett finished first and second (of course we were the only two in our division). Eli had the second fastest time of all the masters, Tom had the 5th fastest time.

Below Rene Harde demonstrates what it feels like to spend 40+ minutes skiing through slush.
